Servicing - the way to keep on top of things.Appliances that are serviced regularly - at least once a year - are more likely to be safer than neglected ones. It stands to reason - but there are probably thousands & thousands of badly maintained Gas Boilers, Fires, Water Heaters etc., that are probably death traps. A gas appliance that burns correctly gives off (as part of the chemical reaction) water vapour and Carbon Dioxide. A gas fire that is starved of the Oxygen that it is designed to have will still give of the water vapour, however the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) now becomes the deadly Carbon Monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is a very deadly gas, which has: NO TASTE - NO SMELL - NO COLOUR
In short it cannot be sensed by the human body .......... CO is absorbed by red blood cells through the lungs. Taking the place of vital oxygen, the CO is transported by the blood to organs such as the brain. Oxygen is one fuel that enables organs to work correctly; if not available in the blood then these organs can malfunction. As the build-up of CO becomes more severe, cells in the body are killed with the ultimate conclusion.... ...............DEATH! Ensure that your open flued-appliances are maintained and serviced regularly and it will pay in the long run, any problems that have arisen in the preceding 12 months can be seen and remedied. Flue-ways can be checked for correct operation and safety devices (where fitted) can also be checked.
